AI Maturity Model

Assess your organization's current AI capabilities and chart a realistic path forward.

Understanding AI Maturity

Organizations adopt AI at different paces and to different degrees. A maturity model provides a structured framework for assessing where you are, identifying gaps, and planning next steps in a realistic, staged approach.

The Five Levels of AI Maturity

Level 1: Ad Hoc

Characteristics: Little to no formal AI usage. Individual experiments, one-off pilots, or manual decision processes.

  • Limited AI understanding across organization
  • No formal governance or strategy
  • Few or no dedicated resources or tools
  • Decisions driven by intuition rather than data/AI insights

Level 2: Exploratory

Characteristics: Starting to invest in AI pilots and proof-of-concepts with emerging awareness and capability.

  • Initial AI training and experimentation
  • Focused pilots in specific business areas
  • Emerging governance and ethical considerations
  • Small dedicated team or champion group
  • Data quality beginning to be addressed

Level 3: Developing

Characteristics: Multiple AI initiatives deployed; processes, governance, and capability building are formalized.

  • AI integrated into select business processes
  • Formal AI governance and ethical framework
  • Dedicated teams with growing expertise
  • Investment in data infrastructure and quality
  • Measurement and ROI tracking in place
  • Change management supporting adoption

Level 4: Advanced

Characteristics: AI is embedded across organization; systematic optimization and continuous learning embedded.

  • AI-driven decision-making across multiple functions
  • Sophisticated data platforms and analytics infrastructure
  • Strong AI/ML expertise; continuous capability building
  • Mature governance with clear accountability
  • Continuous monitoring, optimization, and learning
  • Risk management and responsible AI practices established

Level 5: Leading Edge

Characteristics: AI is strategic differentiator; organization innovates and creates competitive advantage through AI.

  • AI-first strategy and business model innovation
  • Cutting-edge technology adoption and experimentation
  • World-class talent and continuous learning culture
  • Thought leadership and industry influence
  • Responsible, ethical, and trusted AI practices set industry standards
  • Continuous innovation in AI applications and approaches

Assessment & Pathway Forward

To advance your AI maturity:

1. Assess Current State

Evaluate your organization across technology, processes, people, data, and governance dimensions to identify your current level.

2. Define Vision

Determine what level of AI maturity aligns with your business strategy and market position.

3. Identify Gaps

Understand what capabilities, resources, and changes are needed to advance.

4. Plan Roadmap

Create a realistic, phased plan with clear milestones, investment requirements, and success measures.

Getting Started

Most organizations don't need to reach Level 5. Define the maturity level that creates the most value for your business, customers, and stakeholders, then build a practical roadmap to get there. Work with experienced partners who understand both AI technology and organizational change.
